The Fenix Band plays tribute to Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia. Local talent and special guests are invited to join in.
A JOURNEY IN BLUES HISTORY
Merl Saunders was an American multigenre musician, playing both piano and keyboard—most notably the Hammond B-3 console organ. While attending Polytechnic High School, he formed a few San Francisco-based bands, one of which heavily collaborated with singer Johnny Mathis. In the early 1970s, Saunders began playing with guitarist and songwriter Jerry Garcia. He sat in with the Grateful Dead, co-founding the Saunders/Garcia Band. Later, Saunders led his own band, Merl Saunders and Friends, playing live dates with Garcia, Mike Bloomfield, David Grisman, Michael Hinton, Tom Fogerty, Vassar Clements, Kenneth Nash, John Kahn, and Sheila E. Over his extensive career, he worked with Paul Pena, Bonnie Raitt, Phish, Widespread Panic, Miles Davis, and B.B. King. He also recorded with The Dinosaurs, a supergroup of first-generation Bay Area rock musicians.
